Scott Mechlowicz and Amy Smart Learn The Way of the Peaceful Warrior

Scott Mechlowicz and Amy Smart have been cast in "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior," being directed by Victor Salva.

Variety reports the movie is based on Dan Millman's autobiography, of the same name and follows Millman in his junior year at the University of California, while training to become a world-champion gymnast, Millman stumbled on a 94-year-old mentor nicknamed Socrates, a powerful, unpredictable, and elusive character.

He taught a way to maximize performance using a unique blend of Eastern philosophy and Western fitness to cultivate the true essence of a champion - the "way of the peaceful warrior." Millman's first-person account of his odyssey into realms of light, darkness, mind, body, and spirit has since become an international bestseller about the universal quest for happiness.

The novel was adapted by Kevin Bernhardt, Bob Dolman and Salva.

Mark Amin, Robin Schorr and Cami Winikoff will produce the film with David Welch.

Production is set to start in March in Los Angeles.

Further details on the book can be found in our database.

Crank 2 gets its villain and leading lady

Crank 2 will pick up exactly where Crank one ends. n this high-octane sequel, hitman Chev Chelios’ (Statham) launches himself on an electrifying chase through Los Angeles in pursuit of the Chinese mobster who has stolen his nearly indestructible heart. CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE is written and directed by Neveldine/Taylor, the duo behind the 2006 hit film CRANK, and the upcoming GAME starring Gerard Butler. Jason Statham (THE TRANSPORTER, THE BANK ...more

Amy Smart has signed to reprise her girlfriend role and Clifton Collins Jr. has signed to be the bad guy in Lakeshore Entertainment sequel Crank 2: High Voltage – which will feature Jason Statham returning to the role of hitman Chev Chelios.

Variety reports the film will also feature Bai Ling, country musician/actor Dwight Yoakam and Efren Ramirez. Shooting starts on April 28th in Los Angeles with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor directing from their script.

Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, Skip Williamson and Richard Wright are attached to produce the film with Lionsgate handling North American distribution and Lakeshore handling international.

Crank 2 will find Chelios facing a mobster who has stolen his nearly indestructible heart and replaced it with a battery-powered ticker – which requires regular jolts of electricity to keep working.

The first Crank was released in 2006 and managed to gross $42 million worldwide. The film followed Chelios as he raced to find an antidote to "The Beijing Cocktail" that was threatening to kill him if his heart rate dropped and getting revenge on the bad guys that gave him the shot. The film featured over the top stunts, and tons of action.

Smart currently stars in CBS pilot “The Meant-to-Bes” and will next return to the big screen in Fox’s thriller/horror film Mirrors with Kiefer Sutherland.

Collins is attached to the highly anticipated J.J. Abrams’ re-launch of the Star Trek franchise. The actor will also appear in the indie features The Perfect Game, and Mandate’s Horsemen.

Crank 2: High Voltage – DVD Review

In the 2006 action hit "Crank", hitman Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) spent 24 hours in over-drive: fighting, killing, and keeping his adrenaline flowing at full-force to combat a deadly poison injected into his body. Now, in the high-octane sequel "Crank 2: High Voltage", Chev has managed to survive and is about to face a brand new day. Picking up immediately where the first movie left off, "Crank 2: High Voltage" ...more

Chev Chelios takes a licking and keeps on ticking. That is until is ticker is stolen from him. Chev’s not a man to let this heartless act keep him from avenging himself and getting his cardiac organ back. He just has to do it before his battery runs down.

When we last left Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) he had been given a death sentence called the Beijing cocktail, fell from a helicopter, and was lying dead in the street. Or was he? His body is swiftly scooped up and his heart is taken out. He’s given an artificial heart to keep his body alive so that his organs can be harvested later.

However, Chev is not one to take that sort of indignity lying down and he gets out of his bed and kills his captors. A quick call to Doc Miles (Dwight Yoakam) tells him that his artificial heart is powered by an external battery pack and when that one runs out the internal power will only keep the fake ticker pumping for another hour.

So now Chev has to track down his heart and get Doc to put it back into its original cavity. Along the way he’ll encounter the pierced gangster Johnny Vang (Art Hsu), a crazy hooker named Ria (Bai Ling), tattooed and grilled Chico (Joseph Julian Soria), his old “widowed” girlfriend Eve (Amy Smart), Kaylo’s brother Venus (Efren Ramirez) who has full body Tourette’s Syndrome, a lecherous, old geezer named Poon Dong (David Carradine), El Huron (Clifton Collins Jr. doing his best Speedy Gonzalez), and enemies old and new.

It might not have seemed like a sequel to Crank was possible, but here it is. It’s a mad, hyperkinetic, loony bin of a film and I loved every minute of it. Jason Statham has found his signature character in the indestructible Chev Chelios - of course he’s usually just playing Jason Statham in his roles.

The Crank films are ones that you’ll want to call Doc Miles about and have him take out your brain and keep it in a jar next to your chair in your home theater. He’s reasonably sure that he can put your brain back when you’re done watching the films.

I was watching on the laptop and the others in the room kept asking what I was cackling at. It may be just me, but the sequel seems to rely more on the comedy aspect than the first film did (may be that it’s been awhile since I’ve seen it).

Some of the characters are hyper-annoying (Bai Ling!) but at the center of it all is the fuming Chelios and he’s the beating artificial heart of the mad picture. I had a grand time, now I just have to have my brain put back. It’s a stylized, ADD, hyperkinetic masterpiece, just don’t think too hard about it or take it too seriously.

Crank 2 is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. Special features include a commentary by writer/directors Neveldine/Taylor and special guests. The 26 minute “Making of Crank 2” details how they made this mad, high voltage dash.

The 4 minute “Crank 2 Take 2” is about how they used guerilla filmmaking in making the film. Finally you get the 2 minute theatrical trailer and previews of other Lionsgate films. Disc two is a digital copy for your PC or portable device.

Crank 2 is a high voltage masterwork in the videogame inspired genre with Chev Chelios the indestructible avatar of the genre. I’d hate to see what body part that Chev might have removed on the third sequel but I look forward to seeing what Neveldine/Taylor has in mind for the poor chap.

Crank 2: High Voltage is now available at Amazon. It is available for pre-order at AmazonUK for a Sept. 14th release. Visit the DVD database for more information.

Crank 2: High Voltage - Blu-ray Review

You can't keep a good man down. Jason Statham is back as Chev Chelios - this time to retrieve his stolen heart (that's right, he's running on battery power). High-octane and truly electrifying! ...more

Hopped-up assassin Chev Chelios is back in the Red Bull-fueled ‘Crank 2: High Voltage’ - a sequel to the cult 2006 fave that left no camera trick or vulgarity unturned. Actually, I take that back – ‘Crank’ left out anal rape via shotgun but that’s what we have sequels for, right?

Reviewing the ‘Crank’ films is a tough call and highly subjective depending on the mood. I can’t (and won’t) call them good films necessarily but there’s no denying the almost pathological intent to entertain on the part of writer-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (two guys who were no doubt all the rage in their frat houses) - who seem to ride on the high of forcing the viewer to swallow the most abrasive scenarios they can come up with. It is the film equivalent of an alley-way mugging now that I think about it.

The last frames of ‘Crank: High Voltage’ only confirms that we are but the victims to Neveldine and Taylor’s aggressors. This, of course, doesn’t make the films any less entertaining if a constant stream of vulgarities and obscenities is your thing.

‘Crank 2’ picks up right where we left off from the original with Chelios presumably falling to his death from a helicopter.

In a move that would make Bugs Bunny proud, Chelios bounces off a car and onto an L.A. street where he’s literally scooped up with a snow shovel and sent to an apartment-bound ER room for a heart transplant. Apparently triad boss Poon Dong (David Carradine going full Fu Manchu) needs a new heart and clearly Chelios is sporting one heck of a chest muscle.

With a plastic heart, Chelios escapes when Poon Dong apparently sent word that he wants another one of, ahem, Chelios’ muscles and so begins another frantic search, this time for his real heart all the while needing some ‘high voltage’ juice when his pacemaker gives out.

This means a variety of other means – getting jumped via car, a dog’s shock collar, and reuniting with girlfriend Eve (Amy Smart) for another sexual romp in public.

Besides Eve, Dwight Yoakam reprises his role as Chelios’ doctor who doles out ridiculous advice along with Efren Ramirez as the twin brother of the last pic’s character who has full body Tourette’s syndrome.

Most notable new character is the particularly grating Bai Ling as an intentionally offensive caricature of an Asian whore – a character that would probably be downright intolerable in any other movie but in ‘Crank: High Voltage’ just manages to across as mildly irritating.

There’s not a lot to say other than the plainly obvious fact that if you found something to enjoy in ‘Crank’, chances are you will find something to entertain here as it’s more of the same just, well, dumber.

If you were borderline on the first then you might well leave this flick exhausted and not all that happy about it. For myself, I enjoyed the first half but nearing the hour mark was quite ready for it all to end.

The AVC 1.85:1 1080p encode is great, however, capturing all of the directors’ visual tricks with detailed aplomb. The DTS-HD Master Audio track is equally impressive and will give your sound system quite the work out.

Ample special features start off with the ‘Crank’d Out’ picture in picture commentary which is mostly Neveldine and Taylor cracking wise from a couch but also includes various cast and crew interviews and behind the scenes footage. A lot of fun and I had an easier time watching the whole film with this on.

‘Making Crank 2’ is a lengthy 51-minute doc that goes into great detail about pre, pro and post and is definitely worth checking out for those intrigued by both the film and filmmaking in general.

‘Take 2’ highlights all the continuity errors and film gaffes because I guess, hey, if they point it out, then all good. A short gag reel finishes things off along with the cool, standard Lionsgate BD-Live features like on-screen weather, time and news gadgets and Twitter and Facebook updates. Also included is the bonus digital copy that serves as a great cupholder.

There’s some fun stuff here and it will probably make a good time with a group of friends and an abundant amount of beer so it comes with a cautious recommendation as long as you know what you’re getting in to. The Blu-ray itself is a winner with great video, audio and special features so fans of the utterly ridiculous should have no reservations picking this up.

Seventh Moon – Blu-ray Review

According to an ancient Chinese myth on the full moon of the seventh lunar month the gates of hell open and the dead are freed to roam among the living. While honeymooning in China, a young couple takes part in a sacred event that honors these spirits. As night falls, their tour guide abandons them in a desolate field. Now what they thought was a joke is becoming far too ...more

Another entry in the Ghost House Underground label, ‘Seventh Moon’ employs a clever premise based on an ancient Chinese myth with star Amy Smart headlining and Eduardo Sanchez directing (of ‘The Blair Witch Project fame). A fun flick but the grainy hand-held vid source makes this a questionable Blu-ray recommendation.

This second group of Ghost House Underground pics presented by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert that also includes ‘The Thaw’, ‘The Children’ and ‘Offspring’ got trimmed down to four selections after last Fall’s eight and seem to average better than the similar horror group offerings from the After Dark Horrorfest pics.

Only Eduardo’s second film after his breakout success with ‘The Blair Witch Project’, this pic uses the same shaky-camera style but doesn’t employ the lost footage gimmick a la ‘Cloverfield’ and ‘Quarantine’ that’s quickly getting old.

I’m sure budget was the main motivation for going completely hand-held but a more traditional static approach might have been even creepier.

Based on an old Chinese myth that states ‘On the full moon of the seventh lunar month the gates of hell open and the dead are freed to roam among the living’. Bummer for newlyweds Melissa (Amy Smart) and her Chinese-American husband Yul (Tim Chiou) who picked the absolute worst time to take their honeymoon to China.

Hitting up a small village festival celebrating this seventh moon, similar to Mexico’s Day of the Dead, the newlyweds take in some local culture through steady shots of alcohol. Returning to their guide (Dennis Chan), they head off on a road trip only to be abandoned in a deserted town by their once trustworthy guide.

Drunken, tired and clueless, they head off into the town to look for their guide but instead find some quick-moving hairless white creatures hell-bent on doing them harm. So sets off a night of terror in a strange locale where they have nobody to rely on but themselves.

As you can tell by my rather short synopsis, there’s not much to it. Quick moving and reasonably set up, we’re basically dealing with two characters on the run for their lives.

Amy Smart and Tim Chiou have decent rapport and make for a believable couple which is key to the film’s success and there’s a handful of tense set-pieces taking advantage of unique, foreign locations.

Actually shot around Hong Kong which gives it some authenticity, the film really only falters towards the end where it’s clear that the filmmakers don’t quite know how to end it. Not a new genre classic by any means but Sanchez fashions a nice rental for the witching season.

Now for the bad news: a 1080p AVC 1.78 encode that’s as close to ugly as you can probably get on Blu-ray. Not the transfers fault necessarily, the grainy hand-held footage sometimes intentionally shot out of focus was never meant to wow in the home theater.

This isn’t so much a slight against the film or Blu-ray as it is a heads up that the differences between the Blu-ray and the DVD are probably negligible. What would be an improvement is the lossless DTS-HD MA track which does a great job throwing you into contemporary China with mythical creatures wanting to taste your flesh.

Special Features include an audio commentary from Sanchez and Amy Smart, a 12-minute Making of ‘Ghosts of Hong Kong’, a 5-minute featurette ‘The Pale Figures’, an 8-minute featurette ‘Mysteries of the Seventh Lunar Month’, trailers and ‘Ghost House Micro Videos’.

A fun premise that takes advantage of a cool locale, the film itself is an easy Halloween recommendation but the high-def presentation is non-existent. If you’re renting, you might as well go with the Blu-ray but if you want to buy, you wouldn’t be wrong to save a few bucks and pick up the DVD.
